Changing Perspective

I did not grow up in a place where the church was very strong. Up until recently I have not felt like I've stood on very solid religious ground. I have said my share of swear words, told my share of dirty jokes, watched R rated movies, and so forth. But that does not define me. I am not my sins. As I've tried harder to increase my testimony, I've realized more and more that those thing that I've done in the past are not part of who I am. Not anymore at least. I used to identify myself as a bad person because I would do bad stuff. But I'm starting to see myself as a good person who has the potential to be better.

This thought is kind of hard to express because I still haven't been able to fully identify it, but basically, I am starting to see the changes living the gosple is making in my life. I am not the same person I was even a couple months ago. I have come a long way from that point and I am glad that we as humans are so hard on ourselves so that we can keep ourselves in check. I would rather have that than think I'm doing well and not see where I need to improve. I'm glad I can see my flaws. I am recently discovering that I don't have to let those things define who I am or dictate my behavior.

As I go through this week I'm going to try and keep an eternal perspective of my progress. I'm going to try not to get discouraged by how much more I need to progress or how much more I have to learn and grow. Instead I'm going to try to look at how far I've already come and use the knowledge and experiences I've had to spread light to others. My hope is that I will be able to start seeing the potential and capacity I have to develope good habits rather than feed off of the bad ones. I'm exciting to see where this experiment of character takes me.

This gosple is true and real. I love having that belief reconfirmed to me as I seek out ways to live it more fully. Heavenly Father is mindful of us and if asked sincerely, He will provide for us in all our times of need. I belive these things to be true and I will continue to act in faith on that belief until it become knowledge.

How Do I know If This Is My Own Thought, Or If God Is Trying To Speak To Me?

So I think my theory about Satan sabotaging my blog was right. The screen cracked on the laptop I had been using and I have not since been able to get to a computer. I don't know exactly what I need to do in order to achieve the goal I have for this blog or what I need to post on here but I feel like it's pretty important. Even if my words don't help someone else, I know the things I am doing to come closer to an understanding of my worth and my god is important for me at this time in my life. And I feel like since I stopped writing I've kind of taken a step or two backwards. I didn't get to finish my last post because of the computer problems I faced but I decided to leave it as it was. However, there is so much more that I gained from Sister Dew's talk and I would like to continue to talk about just a bit. I came away from that fireside feeling so empowered and full of potential. She talked about the power of prayer and how we can ask God to teach us how to ...

Repentance

I was reading in my scriptures today in 3 Nephi 13. And I came across a thought that I felt the need to write down. Verse 24 reads, " No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon." As I read that I realized how true that had been in my own life. Something I like to do in my spare time is to go slacklining. If you've never heard of it before it's kind of like tight rope walking. You string a line of rope between two trees and try to walk across it. It's a lot more fun than it sounds because when you get good you can do tricks and things on it. But this is just something I really like to do. I've gotten pretty good at it and I can walk the whole line without having help, I can walk backwards and I can even run and jump up onto it. But even the best people at it can lose their balance or even fall off. When you fall you can either fall to ...

Nothingness vs. Worth

I was blessed with some very beautiful lessons at church today that tied together the thoughts and themes from my recent scripture studies and I thought I should share. Do with it what you will but I hope that as you read this post, the Spirit whispers hope and love to your heart. An analogy was given at church today that sort of perfectly portrays our relationship with God. Think back to when you were little, in the car, going to Grandma's house. Did your dad ever let you sit on his lap and "drive"? I don't think I've ever been in that situation but you can see the visual, right? Even though we are given the illusion that we're driving--I mean, we're at the wheel and we're told we're doing the driving but, we have a pretty limited idea of what we're doing. It's our dad in this situation that is really the one calling the shots. He is managing the speed and the turns. Even more than operating the vehicle, we may have known we were going ...
